Question 3- The distribution of my media production

Q3- What kind of media institutions might distribute my media product and why?

As the filming industry is becoming more popular and different genres and types of films are being created, companies need to be competitive to keep their viewing rates up. Genres are widely enjoyed by all different individuals, others are liked more than others.

This graph contains the statistics of the viewing rates which was took in North America by total box office revenue from 1995 to 2016 (in billion U.S. dollars). Comedy was clearly the most viewed genre of filming and reality films was rated the least watched genre. As thriller/suspense was 5th and horror was 7th, we believe this genre was still a high rating and would attract a large population of the audience meaning more income.

Lionsgate Films

This American company make produce and distribute horror films, creating some well known an popular films in the past. Some of these are listed below:
  • Cabin in the woods
  • The Last Exorcism
  • You're Next
  • Saw
  • The Possession
These films have become a great success in the film industry as most the did end up in cinemas creating a great way for income to get back into the companies. These type of horrors contain gore and psychological thriller. This company would distribute our film to a wide audience meaning the ratings would be quite high if they enjoyed our film.

Hammer Films

This company make, produce and distribute English films. Hammer Films or Hammer Pictures is a British film production company based in London. Founded in 1934, the company is best known for a series of Gothic "Hammer Horror" films made from the mid-1950s until the 1970s. Some different films they had produced are below:
  • Women In Black
  • Let Me In
  • Dracula
These well produced films also had a great success in the industry. Women In Black was outselling as the producers sold it to cinemas as they believed it would be a popular film as Daniel Ratcliff (main character in Harry Potter) starred in the film. If big time actors do feature in a film, it will attract so much publicity and audience as they know the skills he has meaning they will automatically know that they will be interested in the film.

What kind of company will I want to produce and distribute our film?

As our film is a low key budgeted film, relatable to key groups of the audience we believe our film would best be distributed by Warp films as the company is small based and don't require too much money to produce the film. I believe our film relates to the Warp films audience meaning a wide range of the population will be interested in watching our film. Also, as Warp films are more populated with the  DVD sector when distributing their film, we believe our film will get a higher income if Warp distribute it on DVD rather than in the cinemas. As our film is English based, we believe distributing it with a UK company would benefit the way people enjoy the film.

Overall, our production of Nocturnal would get a wider range of audience with a UK based company such as Warp. We have decided to go with this company as we believe it will get the best out of our film meaning we will get a high income from it which is the best outcome.
